Travelling Tips for Pregnant Mums

Travelling Tips for Pregnant Mums

BY LAUREN BRENTON | ENDORSED MIDWIFE & CHILDBIRTH EDUCATOR

Traveling while pregnant can be so needed but it may also come with some nerves. Whether you're heading off on a relaxing babymoon or visiting family before your little one arrives, being pregnant adds a layer of things to think about. But don’t worry, with the right preparation, you can travel safely and comfortably. Here are my top travel tips as a midwife and mum of 4, including why I highly recommend the Thery Group’s compression socks, shorts, and tights.

1. Consider the timing

The best time to travel during pregnancy is generally in your second trimester (14-28 weeks). By then, morning sickness has hopefully eased off, and you’re not yet carrying the full weight of a third-trimester bump. You always need to check with your healthcare provider when planning any travel in pregnancy, especially if you're considering flying. It can always be helpful to have a letter from your healthcare provider stating you’re safe to fly to avoid any issues.

2. Stay Hydrated

When you’re traveling, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. Airports, planes, and even long car journeys can zap your energy and leave you feeling sluggish. Carry a large water bottle and sip regularly. Adding some Franjos Kitchen Hydration powder to the water can make it a little more tolerable on your tummy as well. Also, avoid caffeinated drinks, which can dehydrate you further.

3. Take Frequent Breaks

Whether you’re driving or flying, sitting for long periods isn’t ideal during pregnancy. Try to move every hour to keep your circulation flowing and reduce the risk of swelling or blood clots. On flights, get up and walk around the cabin. On road trips, plan for frequent stops where you can stretch your legs.

4. Compression Wear for Circulation and Comfort

Speaking of circulation, this is where Thery Group’s compression socks, shorts, and tights come in. Pregnancy can increase your risk of swelling and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), especially when you’re stationary for long periods or flying. Compression wear helps improve blood flow, reduce swelling, and prevent that heavy, uncomfortable feeling in your legs.

Compression Socks: Perfect for flying or long car rides, compression socks support circulation in your lower legs. TheRY Group’s socks are designed specifically for comfort and durability. Plus, they actually look nice which is a massive bonus!

Compression Shorts and Tights: These are absolute game-changers for overall pregnancy support. TheRY Group’s range is not only breathable but also provides gentle compression, which helps with lower back pain and general discomfort, especially when you're sitting for extended periods. The tights are great for colder climates or flights, while the shorts are perfect for warmer destinations.

5. Pack Smart

When you're pregnant, you need to be even more intentional about what you pack. Make sure you have:

  •      * Healthy snacks: Think nuts, dried fruit, and granola bars to make snacking on the go easier. You can always pack boxes of your favourite snacks in your checked bag (if you’re going overseas always check to make sure you’re allowed to bring certain food items in).
  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes: Look for clothing that you can wear in layers, this is because your body temperature can fluctuate, and you want to stay as comfortable as you can. Thery Group’s compression tights can be paired with a dress or baggy shirt for style and comfort.
  • A neck pillow: Especially for flights or long car journeys, it can save your neck and shoulders from unnecessary strain.

6. Don’t Forget Your Belly Support

Don’t forget about your growing belly. Consider a belly support band, especially if you’ll be walking a lot during your trip. It can help take the pressure off your lower back and pelvis, making sightseeing more enjoyable. Some of TheRY Group’s compression wear options come with built-in support to keep you feeling secure throughout your travels. Alternatively, TheRY Group also have a belly support band that may help if you need a bit of extra support.

7. Keep Your Medical Info Handy

Always carry your pregnancy notes, especially if you’re traveling overseas. Make sure you know where the nearest hospital or medical center is at your destination. It’s better to be prepared for any unforeseen situations. If something happens when you are on your holiday it is important to give the closest maternity hospital in that area a call for advice.

8. Mind Your Feet

Pregnancy and swollen feet go hand in hand, and long periods of standing or sitting don’t help. Compression socks aside, make sure to bring comfortable, supportive shoes. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive – your feet will thank you after a long day of travel.

9. Take Care of Your Skin

Pregnancy can make your skin more sensitive, so consider bringing along a good moisturiser, sunscreen, and lip balm. The change in climate or air conditioning during travel can dry you out faster than usual.

10. Listen to Your Body

Last but certainly not least, trust your instincts. If you feel tired, rest. If you’re uncomfortable, adjust your position or take a break. Travel should be enjoyable, not stressful. Don’t hesitate to ask for help with your luggage or take an extra day to recover if needed.

Traveling during pregnancy can make some beautiful memories with you and your partner before your baby arrives. With the right mindset and preparation, it can be an enjoyable and restful experience.

Safe travels, and enjoy your holiday before the next chapter begins!
